An ELSA is someone who supports children in 1-1 or small group sessions on a regular basis. It is our role to help children recognise, understand and manage their emotions.
We cover social skills, emotions, bereavement, social stories, anger management, self-esteem and counselling skills to find solutions to issues that may arise.
The children that mostly benefit from these sessions are those with low self-esteem, those who struggle to develop and maintain relationships, those who find it difficult to express their feelings in a classroom setting and those who are having a difficult time at home and may need a safe place where they can talk, relax and have some fun.
Sessions will take place with identified children on a weekly basis for 20-45 minutes a week depending on the needs of the child. This will either be on a 1-1 basis or in small groups. The children will be carefully selected and grouped according to their needs.
We are lucky enough to have a room allocated to us for our sessions which provides a degree of privacy, freedom from interruption and consistency. The room will include resources, ELSA support materials etc. The children's work will be displayed for the children so they can have pride in what they achieve.
A child's ability to succeed within a learning environment is enhanced by their emotional wellbeing.
